Business Development Generalist

Do you have experience in Business Development (BD) or Sales and are looking for an opportunity to contribute your time and talents to your community? The Business Development (BD) Generalist is a key contributor to driving the growth of Sustainable Waterloo Region’s new memberships in the Regional Sustainability Initiative and TravelWise programs. The BD team members perform business research, work collaboratively to develop an outreach strategy, communicate with businesses and create business materials to support the achievement of their goals.

As a Business Development Generalist you would:

  • Research companies, formulate profiles, develop recommendations and track communications
    of potential leads.
  • Coordinate external meetings with  potential leads and Executive Director.
  • Assist in the preparation of slideshow presentations and materials for
    external meetings with potential leads.
  • Compile industry and program research for potential business
    development outreach campaigns.
  • Provide insight and support towards the decision making and
    coordination involved in the business development strategy process.
  • Support the initiation, planning, and execution of projects related to
    improving the overall business development strategy.

Time commitment:

  • Approximately 5 hours per week with a one year time commitment.
  • Regular attendance and participation in several recurring meetings (including monthly 1:1’s with Business Development Manager, internal Business Development team meetings every three weeks on Tuesdays from 6:00pm to 7:00pm, bi-monthly SWR Team meetings (third Tuesday evening of every second month 6:00pm-7:30pm), SWR team socials, etc.

Human Resources Generalist

Do you have a passion human resources, with a particular interest in recruitment and selection? Are you looking for an opportunity to contribute your time and talents in human resources?   This is a great opportunity for a candidate early-in-career looking to sharpen skills and grow professionally to support the Sustainable Waterloo Region team to further their impacts within Waterloo region. We provide a supportive environment with mentoring and guidance.

As the Human Resources Generalist you will:

  • Take to lead on recruitment and selection activities (staff, intern, and volunteers); working closely with Hiring Managers to develop job descriptions and write attractive job postings. 
  • Maintain postings on the SWR website, and post to outside job boards.
  • Screen applicant resumes and present to hiring team.
  • Conduct initial phone screens and/or participate in interviews when able.
  • Communicate with prospective candidates, including coordination and booking of interviews with selected candidates. 
  • Maintain HR documentation in accordance with best practices ensuring the HR team’s file management is well organized and up-to-date.
  • May conduct three-month check-ins and volunteer exit interviews.
  • May develop and deliver HR program training materials.
  • Support with annual volunteer survey creation, distribution and analysis.
  • Work with other HR team members to improve HR processes.
  • Support ad-hoc HR projects.
  • May help with planning/attendance of team building,  and recruitment events.
  • Other duties as needed to support achieving the HR team goals.

As a strong candidate you have:

  • Formal education in Human Resources with at least 1 year of relevant generalist experience (including resume screening, conducting interviews, etc.).
  • Experience working with confidential information.
  • Organizational and project coordination skills
  • Excellent writing, editing and verbal communication skills
  • The ability to work independently to prioritize tasks with minimal supervision
  • Self-driven and motivated to achieve results
  • Working towards or interest in pursuing CHRP an asset. 
  • Experience working with volunteers an asset. 
  • Passion for environmental sustainability an asset.

Time Commitment:

  • Approximately 5 hours per week (including bi-monthly SWR Team meeting Tuesdays from 5:30 -7:30pm, team social events and regular HR one-to-one and team meetings as set by the HR Manager). We are looking for candidates who are able to commit to a one year minimum.

Fund Development Manager

The Fund Development role is an amazing opportunity to work with a large network of diverse funding stakeholders as well as manage and recruit a team of passionate fundraisers.

The Fund Development Manager leads SWR’s grants and sponsorship efforts. In this role, you will have the opportunity to set the strategy for this year’s sponsorship campaign and develop real-world fundraising and external relationship management experience.

As the Fund Development Manager you would:

  • Hire and manage a team of fund development volunteers to assist with sponsorship reach outs and grant application writing, as needed;
  • Support and participate in grant applications including sourcing grant opportunities as well as writing grant applications
  • Develop detailed instructions for using and optimizing current sponsorship approach;
  • Actively maintain Salesforce with Sponsor and Grantor information, details and deadlines
  • Perform process mapping for functional areas, developing knowledge of each area’s funding needs and plan out fund development strategies

As a strong candidate for this role, you bring:

  • Previous fundraising experience – we are passionate about skill building
  • Ability to perform research on possible sponsors, grantors, and applicable funding sources
  • Ability to identify issues, and create solutions in processes
  • Strong communication skills
  • Knowledge of or interest/passion in gaining experience in external relationship management, partnership development and funding relations
  • Passion for environmental sustainability an asset

Time commitment:

Approximately five hours per week (including bi-monthly SWR Team meeting Tuesdays from 5:30 – 7:30) for a one year minimum.
